For the first time,\u00a0we&#8217;ve decided to put together a themed issue! \u00a0The theme that\u00a0we&#8217;ve settled on for Issue 5 is &#8220;Hybridity&#8221; (to be interpreted critically, aesthetically, or otherwise), and in order to help provide you with some context around which to shape your submissions, we&#8217;ve come up with the following <a title=\"Submit to Issue 5\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lanternreview.com\/submissionsguidelines.html\" target=\"_blank\">call for submissions<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For its fifth issue, <em>Lantern Review<\/em> seeks poems, visual art, multimedia, and mixed genre poetic works that engage with the critical notion of &#8220;hybridity,&#8221; whether in language, form, aesthetic or subject matter. How can the act of poetic &#8220;collage&#8221; mimic, transform, and otherwise help us to negotiate the boundaries of ethnic and cultural distinctions? In what ways can experimenting with the mixing (and re-mixing) of narratives, forms, source material, and genres be used to enact the condition of hybridity (geographically, generationally, biologically, and otherwise)?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some potentially generative terms might include: collage; assemblage; montage; inter-; trans-; multi-; blending; mixology; mash-up; mixtape; recombination; border-crossing; crossing; heteroglossia; hypertext; blending; hyphenation; interlingual; intertext; collecting; curation; multivocality; meiosis;\u00a0overlay; juxtaposition; patchwork; cut-and-paste<\/p>\n<p>On the heels of the guest posts we&#8217;ve seen this May\u2014particularly Luisa Igloria&#8217;s <a title=\"Curated Prompt: Luisa A. Igloria \u2013 \u201cPoetry as Speculum\u201d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lanternreview.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/11\/curated-prompt-luisa-a-igloria-poetry-as-speculum\/\" target=\"_blank\">collage-inspired prompt<\/a> (in which she encourages us to try using textual and historical fragments as a critical &#8220;speculum&#8221; by which to re-imagine narratives from the legacies of diaspora), Tarfia Faizullah&#8217;s <a title=\"Process Profile: Tarfia Faizullah Discusses \u201cAt Zahra\u2019s Salon for Ladies\u201d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lanternreview.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/16\/process-profile-tarfia-faizullah-discusses-at-zahras-salon-for-ladies\/\" target=\"_blank\">process profile<\/a> \u00a0(which, in its own terminology, &#8220;braids&#8221; together the memories of two narratives that happened years apart) \u2014we feel that the topic of &#8220;hybridity&#8221; is particularly prescient. Other potentially helpful sources of online inspiration might include\u00a0<a title=\"&quot;Whitewashing American Hybrid Aesthetics&quot; - Craig Santos Perez\" href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/harriet\/2010\/04\/whitewashing-american-hybrid-aesthetics\/\" target=\"_blank\">Craig Santos Perez&#8217;s AWP paper <\/a>\u00a0in which he\u00a0observes the dearth of poets of color in Norton&#8217;s\u00a0<em>American Hybrid\u00a0<\/em>anthology, Kenji C. Liu&#8217;s recent post on <a title=\"&quot;Writing Without a Center&quot; - Kenji C.
