W. Todd Kaneko's "Northwest Poem" on "As It Ought to Be"<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

We’ve received word that W. Todd Kaneko’s “Northwest Poem<\/a>,” which opens our second issue<\/a>, was honored as last week’s Saturday featured poem<\/a> on the blog “As It Ought to Be<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

Here’s an excerpt that showcases the poem’s masterful imagery\u2014which is razor-sharp, tender, and resonant, yet just a touch fleeting and strange:<\/p>\n

“Extinction begins as absence, ends gaping
\nlike a surgery, a hole in my chest
\nmarking that mythology we call home.
\nMount Rainier does not drift phantomlike
\nin this poem, but here is that old woman,
\ncrooked under the weight of a century.
\nShe waves off that flock of dark birds
\nthronging overhead, threatening to pluck
\neyes from sockets, tongues from mouths,
\nuntil all we can discern is the tide washing
\nover bare feet, the sound of wings.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We love this poem (clearly) and are elated to see that others are enjoying it as much as we do.\u00a0 The “As It Ought to Be” editor writes of this poem, “Here\u2019s to W. Todd Kaneko\u2019s muse . . .\u00a0 She is a creature to be awed and honored.”\u00a0 We heartily agree.<\/p>\n
