Postcard #009
\nPoet: Mariailona A. Panaligan<\/p>\n

Papang Wore Fedora Hats<\/strong><\/p>\n

They were similar to the ones I
\nsaw on the American TV
\nchannels.
\nThe scratch pixels waving
\nincandescently like a cheap
\ncandle.
\n<\/strong>I’d watch the white men move around
\nthe 4:3 in their pastel
\ncolored suits, beltlines hiked up so
\nhigh that each cuffed polyester
\npant leg flooded.
\nIt seemed hot where they were,
\na different hot from our home
\nin Muntinlupa.
\nThe sun was always beaming
\nin its flecked way as the
\ntongue of each ray licked
\nthe skin of the men on
\nthe TV making them look
\noily and sticky.
\nBut on the hot days we knew,
\nthe sun had a different familiar
\nface. I basked in it, dangling
\nmy purple chinelas amply as I
\nsat on your lap eating ripened
\nmangos and bayabas. Or on a
\nreally good day, you’d take me
\nto the corner vendor and buy
\nme Chippy with some Coke in a
\nbag that had a rubber band
\nwrapped loosely around a clear
\nstraw sticking out from
\nthe top, keeping it in place
\nfor drinking. And you would hoist
\nme on your shoulders and hold the
\nCoke in a bag so I didn’t spill a single
\nsugary drop\u2014
\nandIwould listen to the
\ncrunching of each chip between
\nmy ears one by one by one<\/p>\n

as Papang whistled, I watched
\nthe blue brim of his fedora
\nlike the horizon.<\/p>\n
