{"id":3654,"date":"2011-04-29T17:00:17","date_gmt":"2011-04-29T21:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lanternreview.com\/blog\/?p=3654"},"modified":"2011-10-15T11:19:38","modified_gmt":"2011-10-15T15:19:38","slug":"3654","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lanternreview.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/29\/3654\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekly Prompt: Tamiko&#8217;s Prompt (National Poetry Month Contest 1st Place Winner!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week, we&#8217;re featuring the <a href=\"http:\/\/lanternreview.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/21\/announcing-our-2011-national-poetry-month-prompt-contest\/#comment-2632\">prompt<\/a> submitted by the grand prize winner of our <a href=\"..\/?p=3312\">National Poetry Month Prompt Contest<\/a> (sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kaya.com\/\">Kaya Press<\/a>) . . .<\/p>\n<p>(::drumroll::)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wonderinghome.com\/\">Tamiko Beyer<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>We loved the freshness of Tamiko&#8217;s exercise, and the way that it challenges the writer to combine the particular vocabulary of one activity with the extremely close, almost manic, focus, of an &#8220;obsession.&#8221;\u00a0 As poets, we all have obsessions to which we find ourselves returning again and again, and Tamiko&#8217;s prompt provides a great way to step out of the boxes we draw for ourselves in order to approach a familiar topic from a new angle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prompt: Obsession<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First, make a list of your obsessions \u2013 the topics you find yourself writing or thinking about again and again.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Now, think of a specific thing that you know how to do well \u2013 knitting, rock climbing, photoshop, fixing cars, etc. Make a list of as many words specific to that activity \u2013 the specialized vocabulary of it \u2013 that you can think of.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Finally, choose one of your obsessions (not related to the activity you chose) and write a poem about it, incorporating as many words from the second list as you can.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tamiko will receive a copy of Lisa Chen&#8217;s <em>Mouth, <\/em>courtesy of the folks at Kaya Press.
