{"id":3098,"date":"2011-01-28T13:29:20","date_gmt":"2011-01-28T18:29:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lanternreview.com\/blog\/?p=3098"},"modified":"2011-01-28T13:29:20","modified_gmt":"2011-01-28T18:29:20","slug":"weekly-prompt-writing-in-the-round","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lanternreview.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/28\/weekly-prompt-writing-in-the-round\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekly Prompt: Writing in &#8220;The Round&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This week&#8217;s prompt was inspired by a writing &#8220;pitch&#8221; developed by some of my poetry students. \u00a0Special thanks to them for their creativity and inventive work with image!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3103\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3103\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lanternreview.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/rose.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3103\" title=\"rose\" src=\"http:\/\/lanternreview.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/rose.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lanternreview.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/rose.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.lanternreview.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/rose-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3103\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Auntie P<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Stanley Kunitz&#8217;s &#8220;<a title=\"&quot;The Round&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/poetry365.tumblr.com\/post\/164445717\/the-round-stanley-kunitz-for-8-14-09\" target=\"_blank\">The Round<\/a>,&#8221; the speaker describes the light falling on a bed of roses in three different ways, each of which evokes a slightly different mood and set of images.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Light splashed this morning<br \/>\non the shell-pink anemones<br \/>\nswaying on their tall stems;<br \/>\ndown blue-spiked veronica<br \/>\nlight flowed in rivulets<br \/>\nover the humps of the honeybees;<br \/>\nthis morning I saw light kiss<br \/>\nthe silk of the roses<br \/>\nin their second flowering,<br \/>\nmy late bloomers<br \/>\nflushed with their brandy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As if reaching for the right metaphor, or words with which to capture the moment, the speaker makes a few different attempts, leading to a cumulative vision whose whole is more effective than its parts.<\/p>\n<p>Like Kunitz, <strong>think of a scene, object, or picture and describe it in a series of different ways<\/strong>, letting the profusion of images, metaphors, and colors generate an elaborate and multi-textured vision. \u00a0Use as much detail as possible and recreate the scene in such a way that someone reading your poem could visualize exactly what you&#8217;re seeing.<\/p>\n<p>Now ask someone to read your poem &#8212; this is where this gets fun! &#8212; and draw the scene you have attempted to describe. \u00a0Notice which details and images the reader picks up in their drawing, and how they ascertain larger things like background, setting, and atmosphere.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s prompt was inspired by a writing &#8220;pitch&#8221; developed by some of my poetry students. \u00a0Special thanks to them for their creativity and inventive work with image!
