{"id":240,"date":"2009-11-13T15:58:02","date_gmt":"2009-11-13T20:58:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lanternreview.com\/blog\/?p=240"},"modified":"2009-11-18T21:37:32","modified_gmt":"2009-11-19T02:37:32","slug":"editors-picks-open-books-a-poem-emporium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lanternreview.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/13\/editors-picks-open-books-a-poem-emporium\/","title":{"rendered":"Editors&#8217; Picks: Open Books &#8211; A Poem Emporium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Open Books\" src=\"http:\/\/www.openpoetrybooks.com\/img\/ob-header.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"100\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A poet&#8217;s utopia,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.openpoetrybooks.com\/index.html\">Open Books: A Poem Emporium<\/a>, is a poetry-only bookstore located in Wallingford, Seattle. \u00a0Owned and run by husband and wife duo John Marshall and Christine Deavel, Open Books is the only bookstore of its kind on the West Coast (the other is in Cambridge, MA). \u00a0The store&#8217;s collection caters to a wide range of poetic sensibilities and carries not only recently published works, but a variety of rare and first editions as well.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Described by many as &#8220;a poet&#8217;s haven,&#8221; Open Books acts as one of the main hubs of the Seattle poetry scene, and frequently hosts readings by both local and visiting poets. \u00a0In June of this year, California poet\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/victoriamchang.blogspot.com\/2009\/06\/seattle-open-books-and-poets.html\">Victoria Chang<\/a>, author of\u00a0<em>Salvinia Molesta <\/em>(University of Georgia Press, 2008),\u00a0<em>Circle <\/em>(Southern Illinois University Press, 2005), and editor of <em>Asian American Poetry: The Next Generation<\/em> (University of Illinois Press, 2004) gave a reading at Open Books, one which was well attended by a number of notable Asian American poets teaching and writing in the Pacific Northwest: Rick Barot, Pimone Triplett, Oliver de la Paz.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, the store is hosting a reading by San Francisco Bay Area poet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackbird.vcu.edu\/v4n1\/poetry\/teare_b\/index.htm\">Brian Teare<\/a>, whose most recent book, <em>Sight Map<\/em>, was published by the University of California Press. \u00a0He will be followed next week by another Bay Area poet, <a href=\"http:\/\/galileo.stmarys-ca.edu\/bhillman\/\">Brenda Hillman<\/a>, who teaches currently at St. Mary&#8217;s College of California.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<dl class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 250px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sight Map\" src=\"http:\/\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51wmjHVnyqL._SL500_AA240_.jpg\" alt=\"Sight Map\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" \/><\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Poets, literature lovers, and supporters of independent bookstores in the Seattle area can drop by Open Books (<a style=\"color: #aa0000; text-decoration: underline; background-color: #dddddd;\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.yahoo.com\/py\/pmaps.py?Pyt=Tmap&amp;addr=2414+N+45th+St&amp;city=Seattle&amp;state=WA&amp;csz=Seattle,+WA+98103-6908&amp;slt=47.661537&amp;sln=-122.329797&amp;zip=98103-6908&amp;country=us&amp;BFKey=&amp;BFCat=&amp;BFClient=&amp;cs=9&amp;name=&amp;desc=&amp;poititle=&amp;poi=&amp;ds=n&amp;mag=9\">2414 N. 45th St. Seattle, WA 98103<\/a>)\u00a0from 11am-6pm on Tuesday-Saturday, and noon-4pm on the first Sunday of the month. \u00a0Those living in other parts of the country can join the store&#8217;s mailing list, or place online orders for rare or unusual collections of poetry. \u00a0John and Christine are always more than happy to help, and take very seriously their work of supporting the literary arts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A poet&#8217;s utopia, Open Books: A Poem Emporium, is a poetry-only bookstore located in Wallingford, Seattle.
