This week’s prompt comes from LR <\/em>reader “YW,” whose submission to our National Poetry Month Contest we’ve chosen as our second runner-up.<\/p>\n

Prompt: Rewrite a fairy tale in verse from a different character\u2019s perspective (e.g. the witch in Hansel and Gretel).<\/strong><\/p>\n

We were intrigued by this persona poem exercise, and thought that it might be interesting to consider in conversation with Louise Gl\u00fcck’s haunting take on Hansel and Gretel, “Gretel in Darkness<\/a>.”\u00a0 Here’s an excerpt of the poem to get you thinking (the rest can be found on the Poetry Foundation’s web site<\/a>):<\/p>\n

“Gretel in Darkness<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is the world we wanted.<\/div>\n
All who would have seen us dead<\/div>\n
are dead. I hear the witch\u2019s cry<\/div>\n
break in the moonlight through a sheet<\/div>\n
of sugar: God rewards.<\/div>\n
Her tongue shrivels into gas. . . .<\/div>\n
Now, far from women\u2019s arms<\/div>\n
and memory of women, in our father\u2019s hut<\/div>\n
